LATA was recently recognized for its role in supporting Kairos Power and its partners in developing the Hermes low-power demonstration reactor at the historic East Tennessee Technology Park during the August segment of the EnergyCast produced by DOE Oak Ridge.
As part of early site preparation, the Kairos team worked to ensure that legacy materials and infrastructure were managed safely and responsibly. LATA’s role included:
Identifying and sampling legacy materials encountered during construction
Performing real-time radiological monitoring of excavated soils to verify there was no legacy radiological contamination
Providing environmental consulting services throughout the project
Consulting on building design engineering to facilitate future decommissioning and disassembly
In addition, LATA’s team supported the recycling of more than 70,000 pounds of lead and copper, carefully separating and processing materials that otherwise would have required costly disposal. These efforts reduced project costs, generated recycling revenue, and helped Kairos Power remain on schedule.
This project reflects LATA’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and innovation. By combining environmental stewardship with engineering expertise, we continue to advance our mission of protecting people and natural resources while supporting clean energy solutions for the future.
